Sedation Dentistry
STRESS-FREE DENTISTRY WITH SEDATION
At Bonaventure Dental Care we offer Sedation Dentistry or Sleep Dentistry, which is an excellent solution for any patients who have dental anxiety or may need longer dental procedures. But what is it and how does it work?
WHAT IS SEDATION DENTISTRY?
Sedation dentistry helps patients feel calm and relaxed during dental treatment. It’s sometimes called Conscious Sedation as you are still technically awake, but it creates an insensitivity without the loss of consciousness meaning you can still respond to requests from the dentist.
WHO IS SEDATION DENTISTRY SUITABLE FOR?
Anxiety is a real aspect of visiting the dentist, and we understand your fear completely so we always do everything we can to make your visit to our dental office as stress-free as possible.
Bonaventure Dental Care believes you should get the best possible dental care, and this means making sure you are settled and in control at each level of your treatment. However, for some patients there is no escaping the intense fear of the dentist, so sedation is often recommended to those who have:
- A fear of visiting the dentist.
- Moderate to high dental anxiety.
- Sensitive gag reflex.
- A fear of needles or pain.
- Claustrophobia in the dental chair.
- Those who require longer or multiple procedures.
- Special needs.
HOW WE CARE FOR THOSE WITH ANXIETY
Our dentist will chat with you to understand your concerns. We will discuss all of your treatment steps with you so that you are aware of what to anticipate and when. You don’t need to worry because our team is skilled at detecting and aiding anxious patients, and we will only move at a pace that’s comfortable for you. However, if you do need sedation then this is something we can offer.
HOW DOES IV SEDATION WORK?
IV Sedation (Intravenous Sedation) is where we deliver the sedative medications directly into your bloodstream through an IV line. We monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels and we can adjust the dosage at any point.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR SEDATION
At Bonaventure Dental Care we will discuss all this with you before your appointment but generally, we advise patients to wear comfortable clothing and avoid eating or drinking 6-8 hours before sedation. There are certain medications that you may need to pause. We will discuss this with you beforehand and you will undergo a health evaluation first looking at your medical history and medication use.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING IV SEDATION?
Most patients often fall asleep and have little or no memory of their treatment! This is often the best option for those with severe anxiety or who are undergoing treatments that can be lengthy or complicated.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SEDATION DENTISTRY?
You may still feel slightly drowsy for a few hours, and you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home after your appointment. We advise patients to go immediately home and rest until the sedative medication wears off.
